Paintings
2010-2011
My
paintings aim to create an intimate experience with the viewer.
While painting and drawing with oils and craypas, whether on small
pieces of wood and panels or large canvases, I focus on gesture
evidence of the hand is important and mark-making
to create ambiguous, yet familiar, elements and forms that walk
a fine line between abstraction and recognizable imagery.
Tension
is an important aspect of my work; such as the tension between
abstract and figurative, order and chaos, and the sweet peppered
with a little bitterness. This mode of tension and contradiction
is represented through a muted color palette with pockets of vibrant
color, as well as the varying scale and material of the substrate
I paint on. Paintings can start out with more figurative-based
imagery that intuitively shift towards the abstract, and vice
versa, as there is no set system in how I approach each painting.
My
work is an investigation on how one perceives images and information,
and my paintings suggest that abstract and figurative imagery
cannot exist independently from one another.
