Artist Statement : Post-Bac Series 2010

"I want to make my emotion," said a four-year-old New York artist as she spread paint around in a circular motion. The little girl's gesture was a perfect example of how the toddler-aged kids I taught over the years inspired me through their modest and uninhibited activity. My teaching experiences inform my aesthetic approach; to throw the artwork of kindergarten classrooms in collision with the contemporary art world, bringing into light the importance of nurturing the imagination and trusting first instincts.

My painting process is an intuitive one, where each brush stroke and choice of color influences the next. Applying oil on canvas, I paint abstract compositions where color, form and line playfully interact in intimate spaces. With a bachelor's degree in Advertising Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, I incorporate text design through various markings. My focus is to evoke a raw emotional reaction, to transport the viewer to their first memory of when they were young and they smeared paint or drew with crayons for the very first time. I feel those developing years as a young child are so instrumental in one's life, and my paintings look to unify that past along with the present.
